You’re invited: Bridge Books launches The Pride of Noonlay

Bridge Books and Modjaji Books are delighted to invite you to join the launch of Shanice Ndlovu’s remarkable debut collection, The Pride of Noonlay.

The launch will be at Bridge Books in downtown Joburg, on Saturday the 10th of April at 11am. Poet and performer Phillipa  Yaa de Villiers will introduce Shanice and talk to her about her debut collection of stories.

Covid precautions will be observed at the face-to-face launch, and the launch will also be streamed live via @death_in_the_afternoon’s Instagram.

New from Modjaji: Women out of Water by Sally Cranswick

A new title is coming out in April – Women out of Water by Sally Cranswick. In her debut book of short stories, Cranswick pulls aside the covers to let us in on the lives and inner lives of women thrown out of their comfort zone. With chilling clarity and a haunting lyricism, Cranswick slows down time, zooms in close, and refuses to look away.

Eighty-five-year-old Alma tracks a stallion through the wild bush. A young woman leaves her corporate job to start a wine farm as her marriage stales. A mother leaves her war-torn home to seek safety for herself and her daughter and a girl begs for survival.

Here’s what Jen Thorpe, author of The Peculiars and The Fall, had to say:

“Enchanting stories of women’s endless bravery, creativity and courage. Each story is a beautiful exploration of the world of women – their strength, their ingenuity, and their diversity. Cranswick surprises and delights, her stories leave you inspired and encouraged.”

Women out of Water retails at R240. Pre-order a copy on the website!

Stephen Fry supports launch of Wanda ebook
Can you believe it? Stephen Fry himself tweeted about The Gospel According to Wanda Lazarus, to celebrate the release of the ebook. You can buy the e-book directly from Modjaji Books website.
Three Modjaji titles make NIHSS shortlist
We’re so proud of the three Modjaji titles that were shortlisted for the NIHSS Awards at the end of March.

The Unfamous Five by Nedine Moonsamy and Innie Shadows by Olivia M Coetzee both made it onto the shortlist for the Best Fiction Single Authored: Novel category. Congratulations to Reŝoketŝwe Manenzhe who won the category for her novel Scatterlings.

The Modjaji short story anthology, Fool’s Gold, which was compiled by Arja Salfranca, was shortlisted for the NIHSS awards last week under the Best Fiction Edited Volume category. Congratulations to Niq Mhlongo whose book Joburg Noir won in that category.

Modjaji recommends resources for writers
Modjaji Books is not accepting submissions in 2021. We encourage writers who would like to submit to Modjaji to submit elsewhere, read more books (especially books published by Modjaji), and work on polishing their craft through writing courses and workshops. There are a range of options for writers. Most of all, we encourage writers to just keep writing!

Check out the post on our blog for resources we recommend to writers.
