As a journalist, she was part of the literary scene early on, and one of her lasting legacies is being on the team that created the Franschhoek Literary Festival, she was also the first Director.

Jenny Hobbs learnt her craft over 30 years as a freelancer on magazines and newspapers. She has published 14 books, including eight novels (four also published in Germany), two collections of quotations, and four non-fiction books. She was a co-founder of the Franschhoek Literary Festival, of which she was Director for four years. In 2019 Jenny was awarded a gold Molteno Medal for Lifetime Services to South African Literature.
