Barbara Fairhead

Barbara Grenfell Fairhead is an artist, writer, poet and lyricist. She was born in the United Kingdom in 1939 and has lived most of her life in South Africa. After her first visit to New Mexico in the late 1980s it became her second home. She made many extended visits over a period of twenty years, staying in her casita close to the Black Mesa. Many of her poems and haiku were inspired by that landscape, as well as some of her prose writings, and her trilogy of novels. She lives in Cape Town now.

Praise

“Suddenly, as if from the depths of a once silent river, the beaded human and animal figures within the pages of Word and Bead announce themselves. Now in her 80s, it is as if empowered by a renewed sense of death and purpose, she has given the beaded embryonic and winged human forms, the wolf, the sacred ibis, raven and dove, the antelope and, not least, the ‘ever-present’ serpents – that creature capable of outgrowing old skins – a voice! … … “We are the river people! We come from the depths!” Once again, true to the light and darker undercurrents of her highly creative life, Barbara’s soul, like a river … is on fire.”
Ian McCallum, psychiatrist, poet, sculptor
