Elizabeth Trew was born and grew up in Cape Town. She left South Africa and returned in 1991 after 27 years in exile in England. A former librarian and teacher in adult education in England and Johannesburg, she has an MA in English Education from Wits. Her poems have appeared in poetry journals in South Africa and abroad. Her debut collection My Mother the Seal (Hands-On Books) was published in 2023. She volunteers at a shelter for girls in Cape Town.
