From the 4th to the 13th of August we hosted an exhibition of our book covers at the 6 Spin Street Gallery in the Cape Town CBD. We opened the doors for the first time on #FirstThursday. From beginning to end it was a joy. 6 Spin Street is a beautiful venue, and Robert Mulders is a thoughtful and welcoming host. Leanne Johannson’s imaginative curation of the exhibition was just wonderful! She worked with ORMS to print and frame the selected cover artworks.
“Seeing a considerable collection of the work of the past 15 years up on the walls of the gallery was moved me deeply. I realised that Modjaji has really done something beautiful. Looking up at the covers brings so many memories of the books themselves, the writers, conversations, books, events, and much more.”
Thank you to everyone who came to the exhibition and to our events. We had an opening on Saturday the 6th at 10 am, where the artworks could be enjoyed in the best possible light. On Women’s Day 9th August we launched Khadija Heeger’s new poetry collection, Thicker than Sorrow.
The last event was a brilliant panel talk and presentation by 3 Cape Town artists who have made covers for Modjaji Books. Thank you for your work and for sharing your work and process – Jesse Breytenbach, Carla Kreuser, and Danielle Clough. What a vibrant way to end the exhibition week to hear from the artists about their behind-the-scenes work and to see some of their work in progress. We were thrilled to have Marie Philip as one of our guests that morning. As well as Nicholas Sihlangu (who used to be the manager of the airport store of Exclusive Books at Cape Town Domestic departures. We saw lots of writers during the week, thank you all for coming!
