TAGGED: Chinongwa | Cut to the Chase | Flipped | Innie Shadows | Peaches and Smeets

Cover reveal for our upcoming title Flipped

Flipped by Tracey Hawthorne will be available in April.

In this novel about being seen and what is not seen, the previously hidden is revealed when the unexpected happens. In the unusually wet winter of 2010, two teenage girls set off to a party on a farm across a river and disappear without a trace. Six years later, in the worst drought in living memory, a young woman vanishes while on her way home from work on a busy road. In the days following these events, those closest to the missing women are forced to question how well they really know them.

A new cover for Cut to the Chase which is due out in the next few weeks!
This user-friendly manual unlocks the world of film writing for students. Over the past twenty-something years of writing film, Janet van Eeden made every mistake in the book and eventually turned to experts to hone her craft effectively. Using advice from screenwriting experts such as Robert McKee and Christopher Vogler, amongst many others, she has developed an effective approach to screenwriting. Cut to the Chase, Scriptwriting for Beginners breaks down the essentials of writing for film through a series of eight chapters with practical tasks to implement the knowledge given in each section.

Lithub interview with Modjaji founder, Colleen Higgs

Colleen was interviewed by Lithub alongside founders of other African independent publishing companies. We loved being part of this discussion. Lots of food for thought about African publishing, what’s up with it, how we fit in, what’s changed, and what’s challenging.

Upcoming translation of Innie Shadows by Olivia M. Coetzee

We’re excited to announce that The House of Anansi in Canada has bought the World English rights to Innie Shadows by Olivia M. Coetzee. We will also publish the English translation at the same time. The translation is made possible by the PEN Afrikaans translation grant. For more information, check out this article by Litnet.

You can buy a copy of the current edition, which is in Kaaps Afrikaans, on our website.

Spotlight on Lucy Mushita, author of Chinongwa

Lucy Mushita spoke at the American Library in Paris’ Evenings with an Author this month. The event featured a discussion between Mushita and journalist Kidi Bebey on the current state of Zimbabwe in comparison to the state of the country fifteen years ago when Chinongwa was first published.

Chinongwa was also the subject of a conversation hosted by Weaver Press and Alliance Francaise between authors Fungai Machirori, Zaza Muchemwa and Sue Austen.

For more information on this novel, check out our website.

Three of our authors have been invited to the Franschhoek Literary Festival.

We are thrilled to announce that Khadija Heeger, author of Thicker than Sorrow, Anne Schlebusch, author of Bloomer, and Tracey Hawthorne, author of Flipped, will be speaking at the Franschhoek Literary Festival later this year.

For more information about the festival, check out their website.

You can get your copies of Thicker than Sorrow and Bloomer on our website! Flipped is available for pre-order and will be out in April.

Beautiful reviews of two of our titles!

Peaches and Smeets by Ashti Juggath

Caught between the beloved traditions of India and life in a quickly modernising South Africa, between family roots in Natal and a prosperous present in the Transvaal; between the madness of apartheid and the pull of her own desires, Smita struggles to find her feet in a world beset by contradictions.

Amanda Ngudle wrote a lovely review of Juggath’s novel for Weekly SA Mirror. Ngudle writes, “the story of Smita Maharaj is so well-crafted it almost sounds like a memoir.” You can get your e-copy here.

Shanthini Naidoo has also written a review for the Good Book Appreciation Society group on Facebook. Here is an excerpt:

“This story is as delicate and flavourful as a peach. Juicy, too! Romantic with feminist threads, historic but entertaining, it’s a debut that really surprised me with the balance of storytelling and historical fact. We need more of this to make our history accessible.”

A Bed on Bricks by M.A. Kelly

A Bed on Bricks gives a gift of nine stories, each tracing complex psychological journeys and relationships pulled apart by chasms of culture, age, class, race and place.Jane Rosenthal wrote a thoughtful review for News24 entitled “A Bed on Bricks by M.A. Kelly: Stories with depth and lasting resonance.”

Rosenthal writes: “Although relatively unknown till now as a writer, M.A. Kelly writes with maturity and confidence and a significantly individual style. Dialogue is rendered with wit and attention to how people do speak, and often the narration is carried by long complex sentences that are both elegant and clear, following each other in measured procession. This gives the writing its unique flavour.”

You can check out the full review here.

That’s all from Modjaji for now. We’ll be back with more news next month!
