In apartheid South Africa, their love was forbidden twice over: she was classified Indian, he Coloured, both Muslim but separated by the state’s cruel taxonomy. When Ghaarith vanished in 1976, Asma thought he’d chosen the struggle over her. She married another man, had children, learned to live with the ache of not knowing.

But Ghaarith didn’t choose to leave. Forced into exile, trained by the ANC underground, he has carried her memory through decades of violence and isolation. Now he’s returned to a country that has legally changed but not healed, to find the woman he loved living a life he’s not part of.
