Modjaji loves to work with young and upcoming artists for our covers, and the cover for Dreaming in Colours by Uvile Ximba is no different. Through a post on The Village group on Facebook, we learned about Edinah Tanya Chag – a self-taught artist from South Africa. We commissioned her to create this gorgeous painting for the cover of Dreaming in Colours, and we’re excited to show you the final cover soon! The book will be released in February 2021 – watch this space!
Our thanks to The Village for making this connection possible.
Dreaming in Colours is an assured and compelling debut novel from Uvile Ximba that explores Langa’s story of self discovery and actualization through her relationship with Khwezi: the complex love affair, the fragmentation, associative colours and echoes of her dreams breaking into reality, the hidden trauma and repressed memories of her childhood.
As Langa and Khwezi’s connection deepens, they begin to find themselves — together and apart. While caught up in the Rhodes Must Fall struggle for decoloniality and resisting homophobia and rape culture, they also learn love, patience and erotic desire. Yet their relationship must stay a secret — and Langa has had enough of secrets and silences. She spirals into destructive behaviours and breakdown, and in desperation turns to her family matriarchs to help her resolve unanswered questions and find justice. By turns intimate, joyful, raunchy and heartbreaking, this is a powerful and tender story about
women determined to heal and find their way forward.
