Almost a year ago we published the gorgeous A to Z of Amazing South African Women by Ambre Nicolson and illustrated by her husband, Jaxon Hsu. The book is a celebration of all South African women who make a difference, who work hard for their families or make life better for others. Our book is a sample of these women. If you didn’t pick up a copy last year during our Thundafund campaign or afterwards, we still have copies available and for the rest of July and for August (Women’s Month) we are offering you the book for R250 (and if you live in South Africa – we will deliver your copy to you for free too).
If you want to know more about the book check out some of the wonderful reviews we got. Here is Louise Ferreira writing in the Mail and Guardian
Reluctantly, I must confess to being a big softie who cried my way through the entire book. But don’t be misled, it is a delight. It’s suitable for younger readers too, if you have godchildren — or your own children — you’d like to spoil.
The book made me feel proud. How wonderful to see the extraordinary women of your country being shown in all of their power and fearlessness.
Charl Blignaut focused on the illustrations in his review in Women 24 and Media 24
The success of Hsu’s illustrations in the simple coffee-table book of monumental South African women is to unite his subjects’ diverse histories and achievements into a unified style – and then make them pop with colour, entrenching an iconography.
At Modjaji Books we love this book, it was a bestseller last year and is something of a South African version of Rad American Women and Good Night Rebel Girls, but with our own homegrown extraordinary women. It’s a must for all school libraries, for every big and little girl’s bedside table and as a gift for a woman you admire. Or as a way of changing how boys and men think about the world.
